The Dark Side of Low-Cost Jewelry
I recently found a revealing documentary (link at the end) that exposes what many would rather ignore: cheap jewelry has a hidden cost in human lives and the environment. As a creator of ethical jewelry, I want to share this reflection with you because every purchase is a vote for the world we want.
1. The Harsh Reality of Mass Manufacturing
Labor exploitation: 85% of workers in mines and mass jewelry workshops live in inhumane conditions (according to the Fairtrade Foundation).
Hazardous materials: Alloys containing nickel, cadmium, and other toxic metals cause allergies or even serious illnesses like cancer, in addition to significantly polluting the environment.
Opacity in the supply chain: 90% of "new" gold comes from mines with a history of human rights violations (Data: Human Rights Watch).
2. The Paradox of Unreal Prices
How can a necklace cost less than a cup of coffee? The answer lies in:
Poverty wages (less than USD 1/day in Asian workshops).
Use of hazardous or low-quality synthetic materials.
Externalization of environmental costs.
A striking example: 20 tons of mining waste are generated to produce a cheap gold ring (Source: Earthworks).
Brands such as Pandora and H&M have been fined for falsely claiming their jewelry is "sustainable" (Danish Consumer Authority, 2021 and ACM Netherlands), while their supply chains remain opaque. Shein was less fortunate; its children's jewelry was found to have cadmium levels 500% above the legal limit (French Government).

Your Power as a Consumer
At Dikua, we will continue to do things differently, using only recycled metals, biodegradable or recyclable wrapping, and recycled packaging, applying fair trade ethics, rejecting the false "sustainability" of paper, and denouncing abusive regulations until the rules are fair.
Your choice does make a difference.
👉 Every ethical piece purchased is a vote against exploitation.
👉 Every like/share on this post helps raise awareness.
Take action today:
Ask your favorite brands: How much do they pay their workers?
Do they have safe spaces and equipment? How long does the staff work? How long does it take each worker to make each piece of jewelry? What types of materials do they use? Where and how do they obtain their raw materials?
Share this post to expose the hypocrisy.
Choose real artisans like Dikua Joyería.
Once you've watched the video, you'll discover the EU's double standards. The same European laws that exclude small, ethical artisans allow the massive entry of polluting jewelry. Read about European regulations that don't discriminate between large corporations and entrepreneurs.

Finally, it is unfortunately only available in English, but if that is not an obstacle for you, I invite you to watch this revealing documentary that delves a little deeper into these topics: Cheap and toxic - The dark side of mass-produced fashion jewelry from China | DW Documentary.
Big hug,
Fernanda
